100 Year Timeline

1916

Gus Ackerman opens the first Ackermans store in the Cape Town suburb of Wynberg.

1984

Pepkor acquires Ackermans and starts growing stores from 34 to 200 by the turn of the century.

1988

Ackermans opens stores in Botswana and Lesotho.

1990

The 100th Ackermans store opens.

1995

The Ackermans Club and A+ credit facility is launched. The first card is acquired by a customer at the store in Lady Grey Street, Paarl.

1997

The Club magazine is first published.
The distribution centres get advanced picking- technology.

1998

Radio ACK, now The Sound of Ackermans, goes on air for the first time.

1999

Cellular is launched, selling airtime and handsets.

2004

First Ackermans Baby Company store opens.
The company achieves R2 billion in turnover.

2011

Ububele is launched.

2014

Pepkor is sold to Steinhoff International; Dr Wiese keeps his shareholding. First mini-me store opens, in Frankfort.

2015

The 500th store opens in Adderley Street, Cape Town. Building starts on the new Ackermans Campus (Support Centre). Ackermans re-opens in Zambia.

2016

Centenary celebrations!
