THE STORY OF ACKERMANS
The Ackermans story goes back as far as 1916, when Gus Ackerman opened the first store in Wynberg in Cape Town. His vision for the store was to create a place where customers could find great products at fantastic prices, which is exactly what Ackermans became. Ackermans was, subsequently, bought by the Pepkor Group in 1986.
Today, there are more than 450 Ackermans stores in 5 countries, making us a leading value fashion retailer for the whole family – continuously setting the standard for value and affordability. With a wide selection of fashion for ladies, kids, babies and men, as well as homeware, cellular and key financial products, we’ll keep bringing value to your life every day.
We also do this by providing you with useful services and benefits. For example, our A.Rewards loyalty programme makes shopping even more rewarding when you swipe, by awarding you with Stars with every purchase. These Stars are converted into cash-back vouchers that can be used in-store! At Ackermans, we believe that our employees are at the cornerstone of our business. We call ourselves Phadimas, which means “shine” in Northern Sotho, and we work hard to have a company where we can all do just that. Study loans, children’s tertiary education, housing subsidies and loans, funeral and death cover, disability cover, staff discounts and free access to Ackermans Club benefits are just a few of the ways that we bring value to the lives of our Phadimas. We currently have a number of initiatives under our social responsibility umbrella, which we refer to as “Ububele”, meaning generosity and kindness. We support the community on a regular basis through donations, but we also have a voluntary CSI programme that encompasses everyone in the business. Staff work in teams and choose their own charities (with a focus on women and children) and spend a day out of the office once every year doing anything – from painting and renovating to cooking and planting vegetables. Almost 2680 man-hours have been set aside since we initially launched this programme and it’s been truly heart-warming to see how our Phadimas have gotten involved and really gone the extra mile to make a positive change in their communities. On this note, we launched our flagship CSI project in January 2015 called Ackermans Ububele Schools which focusses on early learning development.
Over and above this sense of social responsibility, we try to look after our environment by recycling, and have managed to reduce our electricity consumption by 14 million kWh per year - resulting into a 42% saving per annum on energy costs.
